Coliseu dos Recreios is a versatile entertainment auditorium that emerged from a joint project of four daring entrepreneurs who intended to build the largest building in the world of entertainment. Built from scratch and inaugurated on 14 August 1890, with the operetta “Boccaccio” by Franz von Suppé, the Coliseu dos Recreios opened its doors before the construction work was completed.

This venue has always been a popular entertainment venue presenting various types of shows, such as opera, at affordable prices. It was even an alternative to the Teatro S. Carlos during the First Portuguese Republic, and a company coordinated by Ercole Casali, which included Elvira de Hidalgo and Tito Schipa, made its debut at the Coliseu dos Recreios in December 1916. Since then, this venue has hosted artists such as Alfredo Kraus, Antonietta Stella, Carlo Bergonzi, Elena Suliotis, Fiorenza Cossotto, Joan Sutherland, Piero Cappuccilli, Tito Gobbi and Tomás Alcaide. In the period between 1959 and 198, lyrical concerts were organised in collaboration with the Teatro S. Carlos, which also made it possible to listen to some of the great singers who came to Lisbon at affordable prices.

The Coliseu dos Recreios was refurbished between 1992 and 1994 and reopened on 26 February 1994. It has a maximum seating capacity of 2,846 and a standing capacity of 5,672.
