It is the ideal place to drink the typical Portuguese cherry liqueur. A must if you go to Lisbon
Ginjinha sem Rival is near the hotel and is a century-old house founded around 1890 by João Manuel Lourenço Cima, great-grandfather of the current owner, Nuno Gonçalves.
At a time when the production of liqueurs and syrups was in great demand, Ginginha stood out for the quality of its recipe, which remains unchanged to this day. They were so confident in their product that the labels on their bottles still say that “This house has never competed in any national or international exhibition”.
Ginginha is the meeting place for many people of all social classes and ages who get together to have a little chat. It is the starting point of many friendships and one of those friendships ended up giving birth to a new liqueur, “Eduardinho”. The story goes that Eduardo, a professional clown who worked at the Coliseu dos Recreios, was a regular customer who mixed the cherry liqueur with several other house liqueurs in the same glass. This “new” liqueur was so successful that it was bottled and labeled soon after.
Nowadays, regular customers or national and international tourists quickly fill the small counter, as they cannot resist the picturesque and traditional look of this establishment – a must visit!
